Convert Windows Server Evaluation to Server Standard
Windows Server evaluation usually last for 180 days and there are times when you install a Windows Server using the evaluation version and decided to move the server to production. So how do you do it?
For each and every Microsoft editions, there are different ID and Windows Server Evalution has it’s own edition ID. For example for Windows Server Standard Evaluation it will be using StandardEval and for Windows Server Standard will be using ServerStandard.
To solves this, you will need to convert the edition using a tool called Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM).
What is Microsoft Windows Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) tool?
Microsoft Windows Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) is a command-line tool that IT admins can use to service and prepare to mount and service a Windows image (.wim) or a virtual hard disk (.vhd or .vhdx). before deploying it to users. The tools is available since Vista SP1 or Windows Server 2008.
DISM comes built into Windows and is available through the command line or from Windows PowerShell. To learn more about using DISM with PowerShell, see Deployment Imaging Servicing Management (DISM) Cmdlets in Windows PowerShell.
Using DISM to convert windows server edition
- To start, Run an elevated command prompt
- DISM /online /Set-Edition:ServerStandard /ProductKey:XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX /AcceptEula
For releases of Windows Server 2016 prior to 14393.0.161119-1705.RS1_REFRESH, you can only perform this conversion from evaluation to retail with Windows Server 2016 that has been installed by using the Desktop Experience option (not the Server Core option). Starting with version 14393.0.161119-1705.RS1_REFRESH and later releases, you can convert evaluation editions to retail regardless of the installation option used.
